When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?
The first priority is to determine whether the natural tooth can be retained. Extraction may be recommended when severe decay, a deep fracture, advanced infection, extensive periodontal damage or another condition makes predictable restoration impossible or inappropriate. Examination and, when indicated, dental imaging help assess the roots, surrounding bone and nearby anatomy before a decision is made.
Your dentist should explain reasonable alternatives, the expected benefits and risks of removal, and options for replacing the tooth where relevant. These may include allowing the socket to heal before later treatment or planning for a dental implant, bridge or removable prosthesis. The appropriate choice depends on the tooth, bone, gum health, medical history and your treatment goals.
