Sclerotherapy in Dublin

After the area is examined, the skin is disinfected and a fine needle is used to inject the prescribed sclerosant directly into the selected vein. Cooling may be used to improve comfort. The medicine causes a controlled reaction in the vessel wall so the vein collapses and seals.

Closing a small superficial vein does not stop normal circulation. Blood reroutes through other healthy vessels, and the treated vein is gradually broken down by the body. The visible vein may fade over several weeks, although some vessels take longer.

One treatment cannot be guaranteed to clear every vessel. The number of sessions depends on the number, size and response of the veins, and a course of treatments may be recommended.

Sclerotherapy is commonly used for selected spider veins and small superficial thread veins. It is not automatically suitable for every visible or symptomatic vein. Larger varicose veins, leg swelling, skin changes, previous thrombosis or circulation concerns may require additional vascular assessment or imaging.

Tell the doctor about pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicines, allergies, clotting disorders, previous deep-vein thrombosis, mobility limitations and any earlier vein treatment. The clinician examines the vessels and explains whether sclerotherapy or referral for another treatment is safer.

Seek urgent medical assessment rather than a cosmetic appointment for sudden one-sided leg swelling or pain, chest pain, coughing blood or unexplained shortness of breath.

Compression tights need to be worn after treatment according to the clinician's instructions. Walking is generally encouraged, while strenuous exercise, prolonged immobility, heat exposure and long journeys may need to be limited for a specified period.

Temporary bruising, redness, tenderness, itching or firm areas can occur. The treated vessels may initially look darker before fading. Brown pigmentation, fine new vessels or incomplete clearance can occur, and further treatment may be needed.

Less common complications include skin injury, ulceration, allergic reaction, inflammation of a vein or a blood clot. Contact the clinic for increasing pain, marked swelling, skin breakdown or other concerning symptoms. Chest pain, breathlessness or sudden significant leg swelling requires urgent emergency assessment.

The first sclerotherapy treatment costs €350 and includes compression tights. A second or subsequent treatment costs €300 and also includes compression tights.
