What Resin Infiltration Treats
Healthy enamel is relatively translucent. When mineral is lost or enamel develops differently, microscopic pores can scatter light and create an opaque white appearance. Resin infiltration fills some of these pores with a material whose optical properties are closer to enamel, which may make the mark less noticeable.
Common reasons for assessment include white spots after braces, early non-cavitated decay and selected fluorosis-related marks. The dentist first checks that the surface is intact and that there is no cavity requiring conventional decay removal and restoration.
The final colour change varies with lesion depth and structure. Deep defects, dark discolouration, active cavities, cracks and developmental enamel problems may respond incompletely or need whitening, bonding, a veneer or another restorative approach.
