What Is Dental Ozone Therapy?
Ozone is a molecule made from three oxygen atoms. Its strong oxidising action can damage the membranes and other components of bacteria, fungi and some other microorganisms. Dental systems may deliver it as a gas, dissolve it in water or incorporate ozonated oils into a topical product.
The intended effect and delivery method depend on the clinical application. Gaseous ozone can be confined around a selected treatment site, while ozonated water may be used as an irrigating or rinsing adjunct. The dose, concentration and contact time must be controlled because more ozone does not automatically produce a better clinical result.
Laboratory antimicrobial activity does not by itself prove that ozone improves every patient outcome. Clinical decisions should be based on the diagnosis, available evidence and whether ozone adds a useful benefit to conventional care.
