Medically, the earlier the better — the first weeks and months of life are the simplest, the procedure is quickest, and healing is generally fastest and least distressing. Circumcision can be performed safely at any age, but older children and adults need a longer procedure and a longer recovery.

Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area completely, so the procedure itself is not painful. The anaesthetic injection is briefly uncomfortable, and some tenderness in the first 24 to 48 hours afterwards is normal and manageable with simple pain relief appropriate to the patient's age.

Babies and toddlers often cry even though the area is numb — usually because of being held still, being hungry or cold, or simply the unfamiliar setting rather than pain.
